As the new year begins, property managers and facility owners are reviewing budgets, scheduling maintenance, and making plans to improve safety and performance across their properties. One area that should never be overlooked, especially in winter, is your exterior lighting system.

At Omni Commercial Lighting, we believe that January is one of the smartest times of the year to schedule a professional lighting assessment. From catching winter damage early to preparing for spring upgrades, a lighting inspection in Q1 can set the tone for a well-maintained, worry-free year ahead.

Why January is the Right Time to Assess Your Lighting

After a few months of cold temperatures, shortened daylight hours, and harsh weather, your lighting system has already been put to the test. January is the perfect time to check how it’s performing and address any issues that may have surfaced, before conditions worsen.

Lighting components, including photocells, lamps, and wiring, are especially vulnerable during winter. Moisture intrusion, freezing rain, and temperature swings can weaken system integrity, leading to flickering lights or complete outages.

January also typically brings lighter foot and vehicle traffic across many commercial and retail properties, which makes it easier for technicians to access fixtures, poles, and signs without disrupting your operations. It’s a great time to get ahead of minor issues and make informed decisions about potential upgrades.

What’s Included in an Omni Lighting Assessment?

Omni’s lighting assessments are designed to deliver value without unnecessary complexity. As part of our standard quarterly inspection services, our technicians conduct a visual survey of your lighting system upon arrival. Our priority is to verify that the lights are operating as expected.

If a light is found to be out, we then inspect further to determine the cause and complete the repair, if possible, under the terms of your service agreement. This approach allows us to provide efficient, cost-effective service without requiring extended site time or multiple repositioning of trucks.

For example, a large multi-tenant retail site isn’t practical or cost effective to individually inspect every light pole, bollard, wall pack, and building fixture. Instead, we override the system to turn on all lights, allowing us to assess what is and isn’t functioning at a glance. If issues are detected, we proceed with diagnostics and repairs.

Time clocks and photocells are also checked during each visit. On properties with multiple photocells, we often conduct inspections at night or early in the morning while it’s still dark to confirm correct functionality.

It’s important to note that a full, fixture-by-fixture inspection is not included in standard quarterly inspections but can be provided upon request with client approval. This level of service would require significantly more time on-site and additional resources beyond the standard service scope.

Common Winter Issue We Identify and Address

Even though our inspections are visual in nature, we often uncover winter-related concerns during our visits. These may include:

  • Pole or fixture outages due to failed lamps, wiring issues, or ballast degradation
  • Photocells not responding properly due to positioning, obstruction, or failure
  • Sign lighting outages, often caused by weather-related wear or electrical disconnects
  • Timer issues, particularly around daylight hour changes

These issues, if addressed early, can often be resolved on the same visit—helping you avoid the need for additional service calls or emergency repairs.

Make LED Upgrades Part of Your 2026 Strategy

If you’ve been considering upgrading to LED lighting or addressing long-standing lighting issues, Q1 is a strategic time to begin. Omni offers LED upgrade proposals that are tailored to your site and designed to deliver cost savings, better illumination, and reduced maintenance.

Starting this process early allows you to align lighting improvements with your yearly capital budget and avoid scheduling backlogs that often occur later in the year.

Whether you want to reduce energy costs, improve light uniformity, or modernize aging fixtures, Omni can walk you through your options and provide a clear, honest quote.

Stay Ahead of Winter Damage

Winter isn’t over in January. In fact, some of the most extreme weather often hits in February and March. A lighting assessment now can help identify weak points before they become problems during late-season snowfalls, ice storms, or extended freezes.

By addressing issues early, you reduce your risk of emergency service calls, extend the life of your equipment, and keep your site safer for everyone who visits or works there.
